What is the Atkins Diet?
Dr. Atkins basic theory on the diet is high carbohydrate intake makes people overweight. Carbohydrates are stored in liver and muscles. Excessive carbohydrates turned into fat. If people are on low carbohydrate diet, they use up carbohydrates and then next use fat for energy, resulting in weight loss. This condition is called ketosis. This theory is the same as mine. I learned this in biochemistry classes when I was in my medical school. He restricts no refined sugar, milk, white rice, or white flour. This is good. But he allows you to eat red meat, regular cheese, cook with butter, and use mayo. This is not so good. He restricts carb intake (about 20 grams of net carbs per day, meaning total carb minus fiber) in the first two weeks. The cab is allowed in the form of fiber-rich foods later. After the two-week induction period, fruits, vegetables, and whole-grain foods are allowed. Now exercise is allowed. You can lose weight on the Atkins Diet. But the human body needs a minimum of carbohydrates (about 150 grams daily). This low carb diet disrupts normal metabolic activity.
