Physical and Mental Diseases due to Alcoholism

I will tell you about the problems by excessive alcohol intake. At present I am researching about addiction in a famous research institute in San Diego using animal models. I believe my father, uncle, and ex-girlfriend were alcoholic. What are the signs of alcoholic? If you say yes to more than one of four questions, you are alcoholic. The following questions are called CAGE questions.

"Have you felt like cutting down on your drinking?"

"Have you been annoyed by criticism of your drinking?"

"Have you felt guilty about your drinking?"

"Have you taken a drink early in the morning to steady your nerves?"

As I told you, chronic excessive alcohol intake causes not only overweight, but liver diseases like hepatitis and cirrhosis, heart disease like cardiomyopathy, brain syndrome called Wernicke-Korsakoff syndrome. It also causes social, work, and law problems like drunk driving. The safe level of drinking is two drinks for men and one drink for women and older people a day. If you are alcoholic, you will have problems called "Alcohol withdrawal syndrome" when you quit drinking suddenly. The syndrome includes uncomfortable and irritating to psychiatric problems like hallucinations, and even death (seizures, heart attack, stroke). So you need help from counselors, support groups, and medical professionals to quit drinking.
